Webinar: Protocols for Treatment: A Guide to Timelines and Assignments that May Help in the Recovery of Disordered Gambling

This workshop will look at the process of disordered gambling and the timelines and milestones many gamblers experience in early recovery. Based off of Dr. Robert Custers recovery model and adapted to modern gamblers, this workshop will provide participants with a generalized look at what disordered gamblers face in early recovery and some helpful assignments and discussion points for counselors to enable a smoother transition from suffering to recovery.

Course Objectives:
1) Participants will look at early recovery and how and when milestones can be expected for those in early recovery based on Dr. Robert Custers recovery model.

2) Participants will learn some discussion points to help engage disordered gambling clients into recovery.

3) Participants will be given some sample assignments for each milestone of recovery that may help the disordered gambler to make a smoother transition into early recovery.

4) Participants will learn how the GA 12 steps can be a help in identifying and recovery of disordered gambling.

Presenter Biography
Jerry Bauerkemper BS, CCGC, past Executive Director of the Nebraska Council on Compulsive Gambling is currently working as a consultant for the Iowa Department of Public Health. Mr. Bauerkemper was the first director of problem gambling (1992-1996) for the state of Nebraska where he created the Gambler Assistance program and pioneered the treatment of gambling counseling in Nebraska. In addition, he was appointed and served on the Nebraska’s Commission on Problem Gambling. He served on the Board of Directors for the National Council on Problem Gambling from 2001-2008 and from 2012-2016. Mr. Bauerkemper is a consultant, helping gambling programs recover from the loss of clients, and is currently working with the State of Iowa. He also serves on the National Council’s Legislative Committee where he helps raise awareness of problem gambling in Washington, D.C.  Mr. Bauerkemper has been providing counseling to gambling families since 1986. He has published research on the prevalence of problem gambling in the Nebraska Probation Department. He received the “First Step” award in 1999 and the Wisconsin Leadership award in 2016 for his work with problem gamblers. Mr. Bauerkemper is an internationally recognized expert on problem gambling and has provided training throughout the United States and Southeast Asia.
